I do not understand why Ms Weingarten calls this a wonderful day. This is Black Monday for NYC Teachers. Without even seeing the fine print (baited breath), what was outlined in the press conference this afternoon says volumes.
Cost of living increases are just that- cost of living increases. Why should anyone be expected to GIVE BACK hard earned rights just to keep up with inflation. Productivity increases are an entirely different matter. If we had the cola and THEN incentives to consider give backs, that would be a fair playing field.
The proposed contract dishonors NYC Teachers by:
* Adding an extra 6-7 days! (Add up all the extra days and minutes)
* Not even a fair cost of living increase!
* No raise! -COLA's are not raises. A raise is doing the same work.
* Loss of grievance/seniority/retention/transfer rights!
* Zero gains on class size reform!
* Give backs of decades of contract negotiation!
*A chunk of the cola isn't even retroactive for some teachers!

As for me I'd VOTE NO!
This proposal is an insult to "New York's Smartest!" If you vote for this outrageous contract you have absolutely no foresight or common sense. There is absolutely nothing - NOTHING - in it for teachers. This is a cost of living increase and nothing more. Not even a good one.
Ratifying this gives that pompous money bag Bloomberg and bumbling puppet Chancellor Klein a campaign brag on how he settled with the UFT just in time for the election.
Teachers- you all went to college for 5+ years, give up your home life and physical and emotional health for this job. PLEASE do not sell your selves out because of weak, ineffective union leadership. Do what you are teaching you students to do. THINK FOR YOURSELF!
Here- this is simple:
Make a T Chart with 2 columns. Under 1 column, list all the things teachers get out of this contract. In the next column list all the givebacks.
As for me I'd VOTE NO!

Thank goodness. Another voice of reason. I thought I was the only one! I hope this crappy contract is NOT ratified in November.

It's remarkable that there's so little notice that they're setting us up to teach a sixth class--and that we'll be the only ones in the state doing so.
Also remarkable is that it's actually 14.25--15 compounded, and barely, if at all, keeps up with cost of living.
They talk of closing the gap with the suburbs, but fail to consider the substantial raises suburban teachers regularly receive.
I also believe UFT estimates of our suburban colleagues to be making 15-25% more than us are very much on the low side.
Everyone is very angry right now- which is probably why the actual contract vote by the rank and file won't take place til after Election Day. I'm posting all over-but PLEASE, everyone, don't forget this anger when you vote- and vote NO!
I agree, let's keep this anger going until the vote comes down. In the words of Joe Strummer, "Anger can be power, if you know how you can use it!"
Weingarten is going to mobilize all of her strength behind this contract, but we have one thing going for us. People know the last contract didn't work out so great (How many different ways was the 20 extra minutes used? how many times did the UFT go to court to try to settle the matter?)and they will be open to the argument that the 10 extra minutes in this contract is not a block for tutoring but a block for a sixth class. Sure, it will start with 10 or less students, but who believes that number won't go up in the future?
Between the loss of seniority, Circular 6 and grievance rights, the added sixth class, and now working before Labor Day, there are so many reasons why this contract should be voted down. I think if we can battle the UNITY noise machine on this, we might be able to win. Remember, a contract was voted down in 1995 too.
